The Paul and Loti Christensen Young Artist Competition is named in perpetuity in recognition of two of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra USA’s most dedicated early supporters.

Paul and Loti Christensen shared a lifelong love of music that began when Paul, an American serviceman, joined the American Cathedral Choir in Paris, where he met Loti. Music remained an important part of their family life and inspired their enduring commitment to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra USA.

As early advocates for the VSO, the Christensens contributed generously through philanthropy, volunteer leadership, audience development, and fundraising. They helped introduce new patrons to the orchestra, encouraged others to support its work, and remained steadfast champions of its artistic potential.

Loti was known for hosting fundraising teas that brought friends and supporters together around the VSO’s mission. These gatherings helped cultivate relationships, expand the orchestra’s community of donors, and strengthen the culture of philanthropy that continues to sustain the organization.

Paul served for many years on the VSO Board of Directors, offering thoughtful guidance, wit, and institutional perspective as the orchestra grew. He remained actively involved throughout his life and was a regular presence at VSO performances.

During periods of both challenge and progress, Paul and Loti never wavered in their belief that the orchestra could achieve lasting artistic and financial success. Their generosity of time, talent, and financial support helped create a stronger foundation for the VSO and inspired others to invest in its future.

The Christensens were particularly committed to the development of young musicians. They helped establish and fund the VSO’s annual Young Artist Competition, ensuring that promising young performers would have access to meaningful recognition, financial awards, and professional orchestral experience.

In recognition of their foundational support, the program was permanently named the Paul and Loti Christensen Young Artist Competition. The naming honors not only their direct investment in the competition, but also their broader legacy of philanthropy, leadership, and belief in the transformative power of music.

Paul and Loti were also recognized posthumously with the VSO Lifetime Leadership Award, an honor celebrating individuals whose service and generosity have had an enduring impact on the orchestra.
